A Medical Mystery Tour

"The Cystic Fibrosis Institute (CFI) was founded on the fundamental principle that
 every person with cystic
fibrosis (CF) deserves the opportunity to realize his
or her full potential, to
lead as normal a life as
possible and, despite the
many obstacles they and
their families face, share
in the joys of life itself."

CFI is also committed to providing educational resources to those affected by cystic
fibrosis as well as to the medical community and members of the general public at large.
An Annual Educational Conference featuring nationally known experts and addressing
many issues relative to cystic fibrosis is offered to those with CF, their caregivers,
members of the medical community, and the public at large.

The 2011 Conference held on February 26, 2011 featured a detective medical
mystery theme that conveyed the necessary maintenance, routines, and goals which
children and adults affected by cystic fibrosis must complete in order to stay healthy
while living with CF and watching the researchers continue the search for a cure.

State Representative Daniel Biss demonstrated his support of The Cystic Fibrosis Institute by attending the program. Also present was Glenbrook South Soccer Coach Paul Agombar who recently spearheaded a Kick CF benefit that raised over $6000 for CFI.

The Conference is not only an invaluable educational tool but also a fun, dynamic, and interesting event at which attendees participate in small breakout sessions where information and experience can be shared.  The program also features the Hans Wessel Award to honor Dr. Wessel’s tireless and lifetime commitment to the CF community.  At the 2010 Conference, retired social worker Carolyn Utech, LCSW, was the recipient of the Hans Wessel award in honor of her lifelong dedication to those affected by cystic fibrosis. The 2011 recipient was Cystic Fibrosis Research, Inc. in honor of the organization’s support of research and advocacy for those affected by CF. The award was graciously accepted by Executive Director Carroll Jenkins.

Dinner Lecture Series
In April 2007, The Cystic Fibrosis Institute initiated the Dinner Lecture Series as an extension of the CFI Winter Educational Retreat. The first program featured attorney Jayme Matchinski and addressed legal issues facing individuals with CF. Since then, this ongoing event has addressed a wide variety of CF related topics including financial planning, psychosocial adjustment, challenges facing the newly diagnosed, and employment concerns in the current economic climate.
