Advancing
cystic fibrosis knowledge and care is a vital aspect of The
Cystic Fibrosis
Institute. CFI, in conjunction with The Cystic Fibrosis Center of Chicago, is
active in the
worldwide CF community and can offer clinical research studies that
are testing the
latest treatments for people with CF. By participating in
independent studies, federally
sponsored NIH research, or pharmaceutical-based multi-center
clinical trials, CFI is
helping to discover and develop new and more effective treatment
strategies in order to
improve the health of people with CF. Dr. Boas and his colleagues
have published their
research findings in many prestigious national and international
medical journals.

"The Cystic Fibrosis Institute (CFI) was founded on the fundamental principle that
every person with
cystic
fibrosis (CF) deserves the opportunity to realize his
or her full potential, to
lead as normal a life as
possible and, despite the
many obstacles they and
their families face, share
in the joys of life itself."

The Cystic Fibrosis
Institute is committed to make available all therapies to
people
with CF whether already on the market or in research trials. The
Clinical Trials Center
is a means of overcoming barriers to research participation.
The CFI Center for Clinical Trials provides individuals with
CF the opportunity to
participate in Phase II, III and IV clinical trials. The center’s
staff have extensive
experience in research sponsored by the National Institute of
Health, the Cystic
Fibrosis Foundation, and Pharmaceutical companies.
Dr. Boas
is a Board Certified Pediatric Pulmonologist and Associate
Professor at
Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. As medical
director of the
center, he is personally responsible for oversight of all studies
to ensure the safety
to the participants. Some of the studies that he has conducted in
CF include:
Zithromax | RSV Vaccine | Pulmozyme
| Pancreatic
Enzymes |
TOBI
Inhaled Aztreonam | Colistin |
Inhaled Denufosol
Nadia Yala and Karen Acker serve as Research Coordinators. Nadia has a medical
degree from LaPerrine School of Medicine in Algeria. Prior to becoming involved
in CF research, she worked as a cardiologist for over 15 years both in her own private
practice and in a hospital setting.
Karen has a BS degree in nursing from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
She worked as a floor nurse for 7 years before shifting her focus to research and
coordinating drug, device and interventional trials at Evanston and Northwestern
Memorial Hospitals.

Barriers to participation in clinical research are
commonplace. Do any of the
following sound familiar?
|
 |
|
|
|
- “I don’t want my child to miss school.”
- “Let someone else do it.”
- “Can’t I just get the medicine without
being in the study?”
- “I have to work.”
-
“I hate hospitals.”
-
“I’m lazy.”
It is difficult for anyone to participate in
clinical trials. The CFI Center for Clinical
Trials understands these issues and is
offering an unique program to enhance
participation for all who qualify for study.
|
|
|
|
Specifically, the Center offers clinical trials with:
|
 |
|
|
1.
Saturday and evening hours.
2. Availability to anyone
with CF who qualifies regardless of where clinical
care is given.
3. Dedicated and experienced research staff.
4. Reimbursement for time
and travel expenses.
5. Study medications that
are free to the participant.
6. Warm and friendly
environment without the hassles of traveling to a
hospital.
7. Easy parking.
8. Convenient locations
accessible by highways without city driving.
